반갑습니다

방금 소개받은 김주현입니다

 

저는 오늘 저희 학교에서

저희 아이들과 함께 진행했던 14일간의 작은 프로젝트의 이야기와

그로 인해 발생한 저희 학교의

크고 작은 변화의 이야기를 여러분들과 함께 나누려고 합니다

 

 

 

 

저는 진로진학 상담교사입니다

학교 전체의 진로교육 프로그램을 기획하고 운영하고

아이들이 진로에 대한 고민이 있을 때

아이들과 함께 상담하는 것이 저의 주된 역할입니다

이런 진로 교사인 저에게 가장 중요한 단어가 하나 있습니다

그 단어는 바로 '욕망'이라고 하는 단어입니다

어, 왜냐하면 그것이 무엇이 될지라도

어느 하나의 욕구를 가지고 있는 아이들과는

진로 교사는 뭔가 함께 시작해볼 수 있거든요

 

그러던 어느 날 우연히 인터넷에서

짧은 3분짜리의 동영상을 하나 제가 보게 되었습니다 [TED 30일동안 새로운 것 도전하기]

그 동영상은

미국의 멧 커츠라고 하는 분의 강연이었는데요

 

여기 제목에 나온 것처럼

'30일 동안 새로운 일에 도전하기' 라고 하는 강연이었습니다

 

이 분이 강연을 마치면서

굉장히 중요한 의미 있는 말을 남겼는데요

바로 굉장히 크고 멋진 도전 너무너무 좋다

하지만 우리 일상에서 작은 도전과 작은 변화야말로

지속 가능할 수 있고 사실은 지속 가능한 것이

의미 있는 변화를 만들어 낼 수 있다

라고 하는 아주 중요한 메시지를 던져 주었습니다

 

이 영상을 딱 보자마자

제 마음속에는

다음과 같은 생각이 들었습니다

나도 해보고 싶다

 

그런데 교사잖아요

그래서 저 혼자 하기에는 뭔가 아까운 거에요

그래서 우리 아이들을 꼬시기 시작했습니다

같이 하자

 

그래서 처음에는 저도 메트와 같이 30일 프로젝트를 진행하려고 했는데

학사일정을 가만히 보니까 학교가 의외로 많이 바빠요

 

그래서 30일 동안 우리 아이들이 한 가지 주제에 집중해서

꾸준히 해나간다고 하는 게 환경적으로 그렇게 녹록지 않습니다

그래서 과감하게 제가 반을 뚝 잘랐습니다

 

그리고 15일도 또 날짜 계산하기 힘드니까 딱 2주

그래서 '14일로 우리의 프로젝트는 진행하도록 하자' 라고 생각했습니다

 

그래서 우리 아이들과 저의 욕망발견 프로젝트

각자의 욕구를 한 번 14일 동안 찾아보자

라고 하는 욕구 발견 프로젝트 14일 프로젝트가 시작되었습니다

 

 

 

14일 프로젝트는 몇 가지 규칙이 있습니다

 

 

아이들하고 일단 부담 없이 도전할 수 있어야 하기 때문에요

어떠한 것이어도 제약하지 않습니다

그리고 무엇보다도 어린 날 지금까지 성장해 오면서

마음속에 품었던 욕구의 순간들이 많이 있었을 텐데

그러한 욕구의 순간들이 무슨 이유에서건 간에

접히고 포기되었던 순간들이 있었을 텐데

그러한 욕구들을 잘 한번 복귀해보라고 아이들에게 이야기를 합니다

가장 중요한 규칙입니다 이제 나오는 거는

 

 

절대 부모님과 상의하지 않기입니다

14일 프로젝트에서 제가 가장 강조하고

아이들에게도 너무나 많이 강조를 하는데 이건 바로 이것 때문이죠

이런 프로젝트를 하려고 하면 부모님들이 어떻게 이야기를 듣고요

아이들의 욕망발견 프로젝트인데 부모님의 욕망을 주입하기 시작합니다

 

대표적으로 등장하는 게

'야 좋은 기회다'

'이번 14일 동안 너 방 청소 너무 안 하는데 복잡한 거 하려고 하지마'

'방 청소 14일 동안 한 번 꾸준히 해보자'

'설거지, 야 이거 너무 좋은 거야'

'이 프로젝트 한 번 해봐'

근데 절대 안 됩니다

그거는 부모님의 욕망이지 아이의 욕망은 아니기 때문이죠

그리고 마지막으로 14일 동안 꾸준히 하는 것

이것이 굉장히 중요한 규칙입니다

이 규칙만 지킬 수 있으면 어떠한 주제를 잡아도 괜찮습니다

 

 

 

아이들은 자유롭게 시작합니다

처음에는 아주 가벼운 것부터 시작하겠죠

운동을 좋아하는 친구들은 종목을 정해서

팔굽혀펴기, 러닝머신

줄넘기를 하루에 1,500개씩 도전해서 하는 친구들도 있고요

 

여기 있는 친구들 중에도 있을 텐데

손톱 물어뜯는 습관을 가진 친구들이 있습니다

왼쪽의 사진을 보시면

지금 손톱이 거의 없는 걸 아실 수 있을 거예요

이 친구의 목표는 딱 하나입니다

14일 동안 손톱을 물어뜯지 않겠다

그 결과 우측에 보고 있는 사진처럼 손톱이 자라났습니다

드라마틱한 변화입니다

손톱을 물어뜯지 않으시는 분들은 잘 경험하지 못하시는데요

손톱을 물어뜯는 친구들은 이 변화가 굉장히 감동적으로 다가옵니다

그리고 이 변화로 인해서 어떠한 것들이 달라지는지

아주 마음 깊숙이 느끼게 돼서

발표할 때 이런 발표를 하더라고요

 

프로젝트를 하고 나서 이런 게 바뀌었습니다

첫 번째, 바닥에 떨어진 동전을 쉽게 주울 수 있다

아, 정말 가슴이 짠합니다

두 번째, 간지러운 곳을 시원하게 긁을 수 있다

그동안 손가락은 아픈데 시원하지는 않았거든요

그 외에 이와 같은 특징들을 차이를 가져온다고 합니다

 

 

 

저희 친구들 중에는 정말 대한민국에서 가장 훌륭한 프로그램 세바시

이걸 하루에 한 편씩 14일 동안 꾸준히 보는 것을

자기의 프로젝트 주제로 삼는 친구들도 있습니다

정말 멋지죠?

제가 14일 프로젝트를 진행하면서

사실은 가장 마음속에 염두에 뒀던 친구였는데요

그 친구의 사례입니다

어렸을 때 어린아이들 보면 뭐가 이렇게 하고 싶은 게 되게 많잖아요

되고 싶은 것도 많고

그만큼 욕구가 넘쳐나는데

어느덧 한 살, 두 살 성장하면서 자기의 욕구를 잊어버리게 됩니다

이 친구도 마찬가지로 어렸을 때,

중학교 때 베이킹이 너무나 하고 싶었어요

그래서 어머니한테 말씀을 드렸는데 어머니가 극구 반대를 하셨습니다

그래서 할 수 없었어요

그런데 고등학교 올라와서 14일 프로젝트가 있다는 걸 듣고

바로 이 주제를 잡았습니다

그래서 14일 동안 하루에 하나의 베이킹을 하고

친구들에게 나눠주고 피드백을 받는 프로젝트를 진행했죠

 

 

 

14개의 베이킹 중의 하나입니다

버터를 사용하지 않은 초코칩 머핀인데요

굉장히 맛있었던 걸로 기억하고요

 

 

느낀 점인데 제가 아주 좋아하는 글입니다

나는 그냥, 그 시간들이 참 좋았다

제가 정말 좋아하는 표현입니다

뭐 이유 없이 그냥 좋았다

이런 걸 남길 수 있어서 너무 마음에 들었고요

또 마지막으로 아직도 나는 하지만

'나는 내가 좋아하는 일에 충분히 용기를 내지 못하는 것 같다'

라고 하는 자기 고백과 같은 글도 적을 수 있었습니다

이러한 고백을 할 수 있었던 것 역시

해 봤기 때문에 이러한 고백까지 이어질 수 있지 않았나 라는 생각이 듭니다

우리 친구들 중에는 관심 분야가 한 가지가 아니고

여러 가지가 있을 수도 있거든요

 

이 친구는 교육에도 관심이 있고 언론에도 관심이 있었습니다

어떻게 해야 할지를 몰라 하다가 하나 방법을 찾았습니다

교육과 관련한 14개의 질문을 자기가 준비해서

14분의 선생님에게 인터뷰 형식으로 마치 언론인처럼

인터뷰를 하는 프로젝트를 진행했습니다

이렇게 예쁜 종이에다가 질문을 적고

선생님들이 뽑아서

그 뽑은 질문으로 같이 깊이 있게 이야기를 나누는

그러한 프로젝트를 진행했습니다

 

미술을 좋아하는 친구들도 굉장히 많은데요

하루에 한 시간씩 그림 그리기에 도전하는 친구들도 있었습니다

자, 굉장한 팬이어서 이렇게 멤버들의 인물을 그리기 시작했는데

첫 번째 작품이었습니다

2시간이 넘게 그렸는데 제가 보기에는 꽤 잘 그린 것 같은데

자기한테는 마음에 안 들었나 봐요

그래서 두 번째 멤버를 그리려고 할 때부터 걱정이 쌓이기 시작했습니다

어, 이 상태로 계속 그리는 게 과연 맞을까?

나한테 도움이 될까?

멘붕이 찾아왔습니다

주제를 바꿔야 되나?

제가 한 번은 주제 바꿀 수 있다고 했거든요

미술 학원을 다녀야 하나?

아니면 아예 진로를 바꿔야 하나? 나는 재능이 없나 봐

그런데 그렇게 고민하다가

어느 날, 유튜브에서 그림 그리는 스케치하는 것과 관련해서

알려주는 동영상을 보게 됩니다

그래서 그 동영상을 보고 한 번 따라 해 보다가

어, 뭔가 느낌이 와서

그다음부터 작품을 다시 만들기 시작했습니다

다음 결과물입니다

14일 동안의 변화입니다

처음의 작품과는 굉장히 다르죠

 

 

 

가장 많은 친구들과 함께 경악을 금치 못했던 도전이었는데요

연필심 조각하기에 도전한 친구가 있었습니다

중학교 때, 실제로 외국에 연필심을 조각하는 아티스트가 있다고 해요

그래서 그 아티스트의 작품을 보고 너무 감명을 받아서 자기도 해보려고 했는데

어머니가 반대했다고 합니다

가루가 너무 많이 날려서 폐에 좋지 않기 때문에

너는 해서는 안 된다

그래서 못했어요

그런데 이제 고등학교 와서

선생님이 14일 프로젝트 주제를 내어 주니까

그 핑계로 이제 도전을 했습니다

연필을 깎기 시작했는데요

자, 저기에 있는 게 연필입니다 여기에 뭘 끼운 게 아니고요

연필 하나를 그대로 조각해서 만든 겁니다

그리고 맨 앞에 있는 것은 흑연이죠

자 여기에 작은 바늘구멍을 뚫어서요

실패를 만드는 것에 도전을 했습니다

성공했죠

 

자 또 하나의 연필에 열심히 깎기 시작합니다

어, 뭔지 잘 보이지 않으실 텐데요

모아이 석상이라고 하는 것을

저 작은 연필심에 조각을 해낸 겁니다

자, 이 도전은 끝나질 않는데,

1부터 6까지 하는데

저기에서 잘 보면 4라는 숫자가 왜 키가 작을까요

예, 어려워요 다른 숫자보다 가운데 구멍을 뚫어야 되기 때문에

그래서 중간에 부러뜨렸거든요

근데 어쨌든 끝까지 해서 성공했습니다

자 그래서 이 작품을 한꺼번에 단체 샷을 찍어주고

오른쪽의 손이 그간의 노고를 그대로 보여주고 있습니다

 

 

 

이 프로젝트를 통해 알게 된 몇 가지가 있습니다

 

첫 번째는 우리 아이들의 욕구는 정말

제가 기대했던 것 이상으로 다양하다라고 하는 것이고요

 

두 번째는 실패해도 괜찮아라고

누누이 아이들한테 제가 어른으로서 이야기했지만

사실 아이들은 실패에 대해서 두려움을 가질 수밖에 없습니다

어른인 저도 마찬가지기 때문에요

그런데 14일 프로젝트에서는 실패해도 괜찮습니다

14일밖에 안 되는 걸요

그리고 다른 친구들도 다 실패해요

이거 14일 꾸준히 하는 친구 거의 없습니다

부담 없이 실패할 수 있는 기회가 아이들에게 주어졌습니다

 

그리고 무엇보다 다른 친구들의 발표를 통해서

사실 제가 이야기할 때보다 훨씬 귀 기울이고

다른 친구들의 경험을 통해서 간접 경험을 하는 모습을 더욱 많이 경험했습니다

 

 

 

프로젝트 이후에 학교에서 생긴 작은 변화들입니다

14일 프로젝트에 도전했던 한 친구인데요

아두이노라고 하는 작은 기판이 있는데

그걸 활용해서 학교에 피아노 계단을 만들기 시작했습니다

지금 보시는 것과 같은데 직접 영상으로 짧게 보도록 하겠습니다

장사를 배워보겠다고 도전하는 친구들이 나타나기 시작했습니다

전에 없던 변화입니다

그래서 한겨울에 핫팩을 잔뜩 사가지고

명동 길거리로 나가서

핫팩 두 개에 천 원씩 여학생들 셋이

이렇게 파는 거에 도전하기도 했고요

 

'Improv Everywhere'라고

사람이 많이 모이는 장소에서

굉장히 낯선 상황을 연출하는 퍼포먼스 팀이 있는데

이 팀의 영상을 보고 자극받아서 아이들이 흉내 내서

그것과 비슷한 퍼포먼스를 연출하기도 했습니다

이 팀의 여러 대표적인 프로젝트가 있는데 그중 이런 것도 있습니다

롭이라고 하는 친구가 하이파이브하기를 원한다

이걸 어디서 하냐고 하면

이대 전철역처럼 에스컬레이터가 아주 긴 데가 있잖아요

사람들 다 그냥 무심히 지나가야 하는 그곳에서

저런 거를 이제 하게 되는 겁니다

이렇게 서서 하고

제일 뒤에 롭이 서 있는 거죠

그래서 롭과 함께 열심히 하이파이브를 하면서 지나갑니다

 

우리 아이들과 함께 이 영상을 봤는데

아이들이 완전히 확 빠져버렸습니다

그래서 흉내를 내기 시작했죠

우리는 해운대로 가겠습니다

한여름에 2박 3일 동안 해운대에 가서

해운대에 모이는 그 수많은 인파와 함께

하이파이브를 한 번 해보겠습니다

 

그리고 비어 있는 종이에

사람들이 마음대로 그린 그림을 라인으로 쭉 이어서

사람들이 자유로운 참여를 하는

그러한 라인 프로젝트에도 한 번 도전해 보겠습니다

이런 기획을 가지고 부산으로 떠났습니다

마지막으로 이 친구들이 했던 프로젝트는

해운대에 피서 온 사람들과 함께

큰 걸개에다가 손바닥 찍기를 해서

'여기는 부산'이라는 글자에 다 같이 만드는 그러한 것들을 도전하기도 했습니다

14일간의 작은 프로젝트로 시작해서

점점 더 새로운 도전으로 이어졌던 우리 아이들의 욕망의 여정

즐거우셨나요?

교육과 관련해서 굉장히 유명한 말이죠

물고기를 잡아주지 말고 물고기 잡는 법을 가르쳐야 한다고

하지만 저는 이 말을 훨씬 더 좋아합니다

물고기 잡는 법을 가르치지 말고

그 물고기가 얼마나 맛이 있는지 그 맛을 경험하게 해줘야 한다고

14일 프로젝프를 시작하기만 하면 저절로 진로를 찾게 되는 일은

발생하지 않을 겁니다

하지만 단 한 번이라도 자신의 욕망에 귀 기울이고

자신의 욕망을 따라 사는 그 삶이 어떤 맛인지를

진하게 경험했던 친구들이라면

분명 스스로 저 거친 바다를 뚫고 나가

자신만의 물고기를 길어 올릴 거라고 생각합니다

Today I'm going to share stories

from a 14-day project I worked on with my students

and the changes, both big and small,

that this project brought about

I work as a guidance counselor

My main role is planning and managing

the school's education guidance program

and counselling students when they have concerns

As a guidance counselor, I believe that the most important word is

"passion"

Because no matter what they are,

a guidance counselor can help students

start down the path to achieving their goals

One day,

I stumbled upon a 3-minute video online

It was a lecture

given by Matt Cutts from the U.S.

The lecture was titled,

"Try Something New For 30 Days"

He finished his lecture

with these meaningful words

"There is nothing wrong with big, crazy challenges,"

"but a small challenge or change in our daily life,"

"something sustainable,"

"can make a meaningful difference"

This was the important message that he left me with

As soon as I watched it,

In my mind,

I thought,

'I want to do this as well'

As you know, I am a teacher,

so it seemed like a waste to do it alone,

so I recruited my students to join me

"Let's do this," I said

At first, I planned to do a 30-day project like the one Matt had done,

but after checking the academic calendar, I realized that students' schedules

were too tight, so it would be difficult for them to

concentrate on one topic for the full 30 days

Because of this, I boldly cut the project in half

and because 15 days was an awkward number, I decided on just 2 weeks

Our project would last for 14 days

In just 14 days, we would discover our passions

and pursue them

When we started the "14-Day Passion Project"

we set up several rules

so that students could challenge themselves without being self-conscious

Any goal was acceptable

Of course, from childhood until now,

students must have had unspoken desires in their hearts

However, for whatever reason,

they had had to give them up

I told my students to revive those desires

The most important rule was that

they couldn't discuss this project with their parents

The reason that

I emphasized this point the most to my students

was that if parents learned about the project,

they would begin to infuse it with their own desires

Here's a typical example:

"It's a good opportunity"

"Don't do something too complicated" "You never clean your room,"

"try keeping your room clean for 14 days."

"Washing dishes is very good"

"Try this project"

This absolutely couldn't happen

These were parents' desires, not their children's desires

Finally, students had to participate consistently for 14 days

This was a very important rule.

As long as they followed this rule any topic was OK

With this freedom, students began

with very simple goals

Those who liked exercise

did push-ups or ran on treadmills

Some students challenged themselves to jump rope 1500 times a day

I think some of you might have similar goals

Some students had the habit of biting their fingernails

You can see

that they had short fingernails because of this

This student's goal was

not to bite his nails for 14 days

In the end, his fingernails got better as you can see in the picture on the right

What a dramatic change!

(applause)

People who don't have this kind of habit cannot understand, but

to this student who chewed his fingernails this was a change to be proud of

Because of these small changes, these students realized they could change

many things about themselves

This is what those students told me

during the presentations they gave after the project ended

First, "I can pick up coins on the floor easily"

It was really touching

Second, "I can scratch an itch successfully"

Before the project, it was uncomfortable because his fingers hurt

They experienced other changes as well

Among the students, one student set a goal to

watch this show, the best TV program in Korea,

He watched one episode every day for 14 days

Isn't that cool?

(applause)

I prepared for the "14-Day Passion Project"

with a particular student in mind

This is her story

When you meet children, they have lots of things they want to do

and people they want to be

They have many passions

But as they get older, many of these passions are lost

This particular student

really wanted to be a baker when she was in middle school

She told her mother, who was strictly opposed to the idea,

so this student gave it up

Then she entered high school and participated in the project

This student chose baking

Every day for 14 days, she baked something

and shared it with her friends to get their feedback

In particular, I remember

that she made chocolate chip muffins that didn't use butter

They were very delicious

This is what she felt It's my favorite passage

"I just really enjoyed those times"

I really like that expression

"I just enjoyed it," without any particular reason

I'm so glad that the students had such experiences

And she continues,

"I don't have enough confidence to pursue the career I want"

This part feels like a personal confession

The reason that she can make this confession

is because she actually tried baking That's what I think

Many people don't have just one interest

They have many

This student was interested in education and media

She didn't know what to do at first, but she found a way

She prepared 14 questions about education,

and interviewed 14 teachers like a journalist

She proceeded like this

She wrote the questions on nice paper and

had each teacher select a question

Then, the teacher shared his or her thoughts about the question

Here are some other project examples

A lot of students were interested in art

Some challenged themselves to draw for an hour every day

EXO

One of the students, a fan of EXO, decided to draw her favorite member

This was the first picture she drew

It took over two hours, and it looks pretty good to me,

but she wasn't satisfied

She started to worry when she started on the second member:

'Is it right to keep drawing with my skills?'

'Is it useful?'

Her resolve started to fall apart

'Should I change topics?'

I had told them that they could change their topic once

'Should I go to art academy,'

'or should I change my career path?' 'I'm not good at drawing'

She was in constant agony

Then, one day, she found a video on YouTube

about drawing and sketching

So she followed the video's instructions

and finally felt like she'd gotten the hang of it

After watching the video, she started drawing again

This was the result

(Wow!)

This change happened in just 14 days

It's hugely different from the beginning.

One student's goals surprised a large number of his friends

He challenged himself to carve pencil lead

In middle school, he learned about an overseas artist who carved pencil lead

Impressed by the artist's work, he decided to try the same

But his mother was against it

"Too much graphite dust will be bad for your lungs"

"You shouldn't do it"

So he didn't try

However, after coming to high school,

the 14-Day Project gave him

a good excuse to give it a try

So, he started carving pencil lead

You can see that this is a pencil without anything attached

This was carved entirely from one piece of lead

And the one in front is graphite

Making a tiny pinhole here

he challenged himself to make a spool

It was a success

Again he started to carve another piece of pencil lead

Can you see it clearly?

It's carved to look like a moai statue.

He carved it from such a small piece of lead

(laughter and applause)

There are more

Why does number 4 look smaller?

It was harder than the previous ones He had to make holes in the center

In the process of doing this, the pencil broke

But he eventually succeeded

We took a group shot of all the works together

The right-hand side shows the hard work it took to complete this project

I learned several things during this project

First of all, students' interests are really

more diverse than I had expected

Second, failure is fine

Speaking as an adult, I told students this repeatedly

In life, students are forced to fear failure

As an adult, I am in the same boat

But failure is always permissible in the "14-Day Passion Project"

It's just 14 days

Many students failed

In fact, only a few students completed their projects

I wanted students to be free from the burden of failure

At the end of the project, the students paid more attention

to their peers' presentations than they had to me

They learned a lot from their classmates' hands-on experiences

Other changes were accomplished thanks to this project

One student challenged herself to use a small circuit board called "arduino"

to make piano steps at the school

Some students challenged themselves to sell things on the street

It was a big change for them

When winter came, they purchased a bunch of hand warmers

and went to Myeong-dong

2 handwarmers cost $1

3 girls challenged themselves to do this

Calling it "Improv Everywhere,"

in a crowded place,

this improv troupe produced a very unique situation

After watching this video, the students were inspired

They wanted to produce a similar performance

This team performed several skits In one of these skits

a man named Rob wanted to give people a high five

They did this on escalators,

like the long one at the Ewha Woman's University subway station

In a place where most people just pass by casually,

they did a project like this

Just standing like this

You can see Rob standing in the very back

As people pass by, they give him a high five

After seeing this video,

the students were completely hooked,

so we decided to reproduce this project

We went to Haeundae Beach

and stayed there for 3 days during the summer

In the middle of Haeundae's huge crowds,

we tried to give people high fives

And pictures that people had drawn

on blank sheets of paper were lined up

People could take part in this project freely

We called it "A Line Project."

With this plan in mind, we went to Busan

Busan Station Wow, this is Busan!

Busan is so hot and sunny! High five!

We said hello to people coming to Busan We greeted them with high fives

Hey!

You charming person!

Surprised that more people came than we expected

There was a pretty good response We had fun

We took our signs to the street to give high fives

It was a project led in person, outside the school

We were feeling strong emotions during a one-of-a-kind experience

People on the street were a little taken aback, but

many people enjoyed this project together

After the flash mob, we immediately moved on to "A Line Project"

We started with a couple of pictures that had been made in advance

Many people participated:

children, grandfathers, middle-aged women, foreigners, couples, etc.

We kept the event open until sunset

3 hours after starting our project,

we had made a line 100 meters long

This was twice as long as we'd expected

"A Line Project" is a success!

The last project the students did was

asking people on vacation in Haeundae

to make handprints to create

the sentence, "This is Busan." Together, the students completed these challenges

Through the 14-Day Project,

students were able to challenge themselves and explore their passions

There is an expression popular with education professionals:

"Don't give a student a fish"

"Teach him how to fish"

But I prefer these words:

Don't teach him how to fish Show him how delicious fish can be

The 14-Day Project doesn't automatically make students find

their future calling

But someone who has, at least once, had the opportunity

to listen to her own passions and experience the taste of

life lived according to these passions,

she will brave the harsh sea, and, I think, get her own fish
