안녕하세요! 반갑습니다

 

I’m very happy to see you

만나 뵙게 되어 정말 기쁩니다

 

Today, I’m going to talk about the biggest concern that most of you guys have

오늘 저는 많은 분이 하는 고민에 관해서 이야기 하려고 합니다

 

A few months ago

I received a phone call from my son who is studying jazz piano in Japan

몇 달 전 일본에서 재즈 피아노를 공부하는 아들에게서 전화가 왔어요

 

He's a third year university student

Now, he is seriously concerned about getting a job after his graduation

아들은 대학교 3학년인데요 졸업 후 미래에 대해 걱정하고 있었습니다

 

and He said "Mom, there are so many professionals out there"

아들이 말하더군요 “엄마, 세상에는 대단한 사람들이 정말 많아”

 

"They're better at playing the piano and composing music"

“나보다 피아노도 잘 치고, 작곡도 잘해”

"What am I going to do? How am I going to get a job?"

“어떻게 하지?"

“어떻게 해야 직업을 가질 수 있을까?”

"Mom, What are you think?"

“엄마, 어떻게 생각해?”

"Do you think I can make a living with music?"

“내가 음악으로 먹고살 수 있을 거 같아?”

 

You know what I said?

제가 뭐라고 했는지 아세요?

 

"Absolutely not!!" (laughter)

“아니, 절대 못 할 거야”

"You can't, You know why?"

“왠지 아니?”

"Because you are afraid"

“그건 네가 두려워하기 때문이야”

 

But I was very glad to hear that

그렇지만 한편으로는 기뻤어요

because it was a sign that he was growing up

미래를 걱정한다는 것은 잘 성장하고 있다는 신호니까요

Not too long ago while I was on a tour, visiting Australia, Canada and the States,

얼마 전 저는 호주, 캐나다 , 미국으로 강연 투어를 하면서

I met so many wonderful people

멋진 사람들을 많이 만났습니다

 

And among them, I remember this lady who asked me this question

그중 저에게 질문을 던진 한 여성이 기억에 남습니다

Well, first of all, she wants to be a YouTuber Just like millions of others

그녀는 유튜버가 되고 싶다고 이야기했어요 수많은 사람들 처럼요

You know, there's fun, fame and money

재미도 있고, 유명해지고, 돈도 벌 수 있으니까요

 

So, She said,

그녀는 말했습니다

 

"I really want to teach English on Youtube"

“저는 유튜브에서 영어를 가르치고 싶어요”

"I’ve been thinking about this for about a year"

“벌써 일 년 넘게 이런 생각을 했어요”

"But I think it’s a little too late for me"

“그런데 너무 늦은 거 같아요”

"Too many people are doing this already"

“벌써 많은 사람이 하고 있으니까요”

"before me"

"Do you think I still have a chance?"

“저에게도 아직 기회가 있을까요?”

"Can I start now?"

“지금 시작해도 늦지 않을까요?”

 

you know what I said,

제가 뭐라고 했을지 아시죠?

 

"Absolutely not"

“아니, 절대 못 해요”

"You can't, because you are still afraid"

“왜냐하면 아직도 두려워하잖아요”

 

Well, not only this lady and my son

이건 그 여성분과 제 아들만 해당되는 건 아닌 것 같아요

this is probably the same concern

that most of you guys have

많은 분이 이 같은 걱정을 하고 있을 겁니다

 

So this is what I wanna talk about today

그래서 오늘은 이것에 대한 이야기를 해보려고 해요

Many young people ask me all the time

많은 청년들이 저에게 묻습니다

 

“How can I start my career in this crowded industry

“어떻게 이 치열한 경쟁 속에서 제 커리어를 시작할 수 있을까요?”

Where do I begin?

“어디에서 시작해야 할까요?”

It is very difficult to get a job and to start a career

“취업하고 일을 시작하는 것이 정말 어려워요”

"There is no space for me”

“저를 위한 자리는 없는 것 같아요”

 

They are concerned

that they might not have a job or a position

when they finish their college education

많은 청년들이 대학 졸업 후 취업을 못할 것을 걱정합니다

 

I totally understand where that fear is coming from

저도 그런 불안함이 어디서 오는지 전적으로 이해하고 있어요

 

30 years ago the world economy was growing rapidly

30년 전만 하더라도 세계 경제는 빠르게 성장하고 있었습니다

 

So, there were many jobs out there for young people

젊은이를 위한 일자리가 많았어요

 

But now things are very different than 30 years ago

그러나 지금은 상황이 많이 달라졌습니다

 

The economy is not growing as fast as it used to 

So there aren't many jobs for young people to have

경제가 이전만큼 성장하지 못하니

청년들의 일자리가 많지 않은 거죠

And they fear for that

당연히 불안할 수밖에 없죠

 

However, just because you have that fear you can't just give up

하지만 불안하다고 해서 포기할 수는 없어요

You can't stop seeking for a job You must start something to move forward

일자리 찾는 것을 멈출 수 없습니다

앞으로 나아가기 위해서는 뭔가를 시작해야만 하죠

For instance, Let’s talk about the fashion industry

패션 산업을 예로 들어볼까요?

It is one of the most crowded fields in this world

패션 산업은 경쟁이 가장 치열한 분야 중에 하나입니다

And New York City is the perfect example of that

대표적으로 뉴욕이 그렇죠

New York is indeed the most popular fashion city in the world

뉴욕은 가장 유명한 패션 도시 중 하나죠

The city is filled with people who work in the fashion industry

패션 산업에 종사하는 사람이 넘쳐나는 곳이기도 하죠

There are countless fashion designers, models, photographers, pattern makers and many more

수많은 패션 디자이너와 모델, 사진작가, 패턴사가 있다 보니

So, if you want to start your own fashion business in New York, you’re going to have a tough time

뉴욕에서 패션 사업을 한다는 것은 정말 어려운 일입니다

Because you will meet a lot of people

어디를 가든 당신보다 먼저 패션 사업에 뛰어든 사람을 만나게 될테니까요

who have worked before you and some of them have already succeeded

그리고 그들 중 몇몇은 이미 성공했을 겁니다

So, does that mean you can't start your fashion business in New York?

그렇다면, 뉴욕에서는 패션 사업을 하면 안 되는 걸까요 ?

Do you have to give up your dream?

그냥 꿈을 포기해야만 하는 걸까요?

Let me tell you a story of a man who was born and raised in Queens, New York.

한 남자의 이야기를 들려드릴께요

그는 뉴욕 퀸스에서 태어나고 자랐습니다

 

His name is Laquan Smith

이름은 라콴 스미스(Laquan Smith)입니다

 

On his 13th birthday he asked his grandma to buy a sewing machine

as his birthday present

라콴은 13살 생일에 할머니에게 생일 선물로 재봉틀을 사달라고 했어요

 

and His grandma taught him how to make patterns

할머니는 라콴에게 패턴 짜는 법을 가르쳐 주었고

and he also got some old clothes from his mom

and ripped the seams open to understand how the clothes were made

라콴은 엄마의 오래된 옷을 뜯어서 공부하며 어떻게 옷이 만들어지는지 알게 되었죠

 

To him it seemed like connecting the dots Gradually he understood the foundation of fashion

그에게 이것은 점과 점을 잇는 것처럼 보였어요

그렇게 라콴은 조금씩 패션의 기초에 대해 알아가기 시작했습니다

 

Soon after, he started forming his own concept of pattern making

얼마 지나지 않아 그는 자신만의 콘셉트로 패턴을 만들기 시작했습니다

 

A few years later,

he wanted to enter some famous fashion schools in New York, such as FIT and Parsons

몇 년 뒤, 그는 뉴욕의 유명 패션 학교에 들어가려고 했습니다

FIT, Parsons 같은 학교 말이죠

 

But unfortunately he was rejected from both schools And it was devastating for him

하지만 불행하게도 라콴은 합격하지 못했습니다

절망에 빠졌죠

Because he had no idea how to start his fashion career and he really didn't know where to begin

어떻게 패션 커리어를 시작해야 할지 알 수 없었고 어디에서 시작해야할지도 알 수 없었기 때문입니다

 

So, he started walking around the New York city

그래서, 그는 자신이 디자인한 옷을 입고 뉴욕을 돌아다니기 시작했습니다

wearing his own designs until people started to take notice of him

사람들이 그를 알아볼 때까지 말이죠

 

And he also sent out personal DM’s to celebrities,

또 유명 연예인들에게 메시지를 보냈습니다

saying “Are you interested in my designs? If you are, please contact me"

‘제 옷에 관심이 있으면 연락 주세요’ 라고요

 

Surprisingly, he got some responses from well known celebrities

그런데 놀랍게도 몇몇 연예인에게서 답장을 받았습니다

And that's how it all started Now, he is one of the finest New York’s fashion designers

이렇게 라콴의 커리어는 시작되었고

뉴욕에서 주목받는 패션 디자이너 중 한 사람이 되었습니다

 

A couple of years ago, he had an interview with some fashion magazines and he said

몇 년 전, 라콴은 패션 잡지와의 인터뷰에서 이런 말을 했습니다

“I tried to give a confirmation to myself everyday by telling myself not to give up”

“매일 스스로에게 확신을 주려고 노력했어요”

“절대 포기하지 않겠다고 되뇌이면서요”

His rule was very simple

“정말 간단한 규칙이었습니다”

 

"Not to give up ”

“포기하지 않는다”

If you still have that fear of starting your career, imagine this situation

아직도 새로운 커리어를 시작하는 게 두렵다면

이런 상상을 해보세요

Monday morning at 8, You are waiting for the subway train

월요일 아침 8시

여러분은 지하철을 기다리고 있습니다

All these subway trains are so (so) crowded and when you look at the on coming train

지하철은 사람들로 붐비고

 

there’s no space for you to get on

아무리 둘러봐도 들어갈 곳은 없습니다

 

So, what do you usually do?

이럴 땐 보통 어떻게 하시나요?

 

Do you try to get on that crowded train or wait for the next one?

지하철이 붐벼도 그냥 타시나요? 아니면

다음 지하철을 기다리시나요?

 

This sort of situation happens every morning

이런 상황은 매일 아침 출근길에 항상 벌어지는 일이죠

 

Right before the train stops people usually prepare themselves both mentally and physically

사람들은 지하철이 도착하기 전 이미 몸과 마음의 준비를 마칩니다

 

You know, because it's a war

사실상 이것은 전쟁과 같기 때문이죠

 

Mentally it is very very stressful and physically it is very tiring

스트레스도 엄청나고 몸도 매우 피곤한 일이죠

 

So, if you don’t want to be late,

you have be a warrior

지각하고 싶지 않다면 당신은 전사가 되어야 할 겁니다

 

Determined to put your body on that train

‘내 몸을 열차 안에 넣고 말겠다’라고 굳은 결심을 해야죠

 

As soon as the door opens you see a tiny (tiny tiny) spot

지하철 문이 열리면 , 우리는 아주 작은 공간을 찾아냅니다

 

And you know it is yours

You must go and get it

Before anyone else

다른 사람이 차지하기 전에 내 자리로 만들어야 하죠

 

You know, there are three steps

3가지 단계가 있을 겁니다

The first step is to put your one foot on the train

첫 번째는 먼저 한쪽 발을 열차에 넣는 것입니다

That is the start

이게 시작이죠

The second, you have to start a silent communication

with people on the train deliver your message with your eyes

두 번째는 열차 안에 있는 사람들과 눈으로 대화를 시작하는 것입니다

I'm on the train

‘저 탔어요’

Please excuse me

‘미안하지만’

Allow me some space

‘조금만 자리를 내어 주시죠’

 

And that is not it

여기서 끝이 아닙니다

You still need to make a little more space for your journey

아직 조금의 공간이 더 필요하죠

Everyone has their own skill of making space Some people might use their backpacks

사람들은 지하철에서 공간을 만드는 자신만의 방법이 있습니다

어떤 사람은 가방으로

their shoulders, even with their bottom

어떤 사람은 어깨로

심지어는 엉덩이로 밀면서 말이죠

 

I am talking about what you've been doing every morning

지금 저는 여러분이 매일 아침 겪는 일을 이야기하고 있어요

Can’t you picture yourself in this story?

다들 본인들 모습이 눈에 선하죠?

You do this every single day

우리는 매일 아침 이렇게 살았어요

You did it this morning

오늘 아침도 그랬고요

You are doing something amazing everyday

여러분은 정말 엄청나게 대단한 일을 매일 하는 거예요

So, why don’t you apply this experience to start your career

그렇다면

이런 경험을 커리어를 시작하는데 적용해보면 어떨까요?

Starting your career is not that much different than getting on the crowded train

커리어를 시작하는 것은 붐비는 지하철에 올라타는 것과 별로 다르지 않습니다

Squeeze your body into the crowded industry

일단 몸을 구겨서 치열한 분야에 들어가세요

Then you will find your own space

그러면 분명 여러분의 자리를 얻을 수 있을 겁니다

And that will be the start of your career The only thing that you have to do is not to give up

그렇게 커리어를 시작해 보는 거죠

한 가지 꼭 해야하는 것은

절대 포기하지 않는 겁니다

여러분들이 아시는 것처럼

I am one of the most well-known motivational speakers in Korea

저는 한국에서 꽤 유명한 강사 중 한 명입니다

 

(applause)

Thank you (applause) Thank you very much (applause)

And I have been doing this for the past 26 years

벌써 26년째 이 일을 하고 있어요

And everyone tells me

사람들은 저에게 말해요

"You are the best in this field" 

"이 분야에서 최고가 되셨네요"

"You are so successful"

"성공하셨어요"

But I don't think I am I'm still challenging myself

글쎄요 저는 그렇게 생각하지 않아요 저는 아직 도전 중이거든요

 

For the past few years,

지난 몇 년간

I have been asking myself what would have to be my next challenge

‘나의 다음 도전은 무엇이 되어야 할까?’에 대해 많이 고민했습니다

And I said to myself I'm going to be an international motivational speaker

그리고 말했습니다

‘나는 세계적인 강사가 될 거야!’라고 말이죠

Giving and sharing my stories with people all over the world

저의 이야기를 전 세계의 사람과 나누고 싶어요

 

To do that I must speak English fluently

그러기 위해서 반드시 영어를 잘해야만 해요

So, a couple of years ago I started practicing English

그래서

몇 년 전부터 영어 공부를 시작했습니다

Even though I was so busy with my daily schedule

매일 스케줄이 바빠도

I always made time for my English class

항상 영어 공부를 했습니다

And sometimes I had classes around midnight

밤 12시에 영어 수업을 한 적도 많아요

I was crazy

정말 미쳤죠?

 

So

My friends used to say,

그러자 제 친구들이 그러더라고요

“Mikyung, Why do you torture yourself?"

“미경아, 넌 왜 그렇게 너를 못살게 구니?”

"It is impossible to be fluent in English at our age"

“우리 나이에 영어를 어떻게 해?”

"Just Forget it”

“그냥 포기해”

Well, they were wrong

글쎄요

제 친구들은 틀렸어요

It's me I'm talking to

저 김미경이에요

(Applause and cheers)

(박수와 환호)

I continued my own way of practicing English

저는 저만의 방식으로 꾸준히 영어 공부를 했습니다

For example

I would watch all kinds of English programs

예를 들면 영어로 된 프로그램을 많이 봤어요

Such as CNN news, TED talk, American shows, soap operas and more

CNN 뉴스, TED, 토크쇼, 미국드라마 같은 거요

And now I can watch these shows without the subtitle

요즘은 자막 없이 다 볼 수 있어요

(Applause)

(박수)

 

Well, I just watched them

그냥 보는 거예요

I didn't say I understand them

이해한다고는 말 안 했습니다

(Laughter)

(웃음)

 

Yes You can do that too

여러분도 그냥 볼 수는 있잖아요

(Applause)

And you know, Recently I was watching this show

얼마 전에 본 미국 드라마에서 두 명이 감옥에 갔는데

and a coupl of guys went to jail but I still don't know why

왜 감옥에 갔는지는 아직도 모릅니다

You know, It'll take some time but sooner or later I going to find out why

시간이 걸리겠지만

언젠가는 알게 되겠죠

 

As you know practicing English everyday is not easy

아시다시피 영어 공부를 매일 한다는 게 쉬운 일은 아닙니다

Sometimes there were moments where I wanted to stop everything

가끔은 정말 다 때려치우고 싶은 순간도 있었어요

I was asking myself, "Why am I doing this? I don't have to do this"

스스로 물어봤어요 ‘왜 내가 이러고 있지?’

‘이렇게 할 필요까지는 없잖아’

But I know myself better than anyone else, I was not going to give up

하지만 저는 저 자신을 누구보다 잘 알아요

전 포기하지 않을 거예요

I know exactly what I want

전 제가 무엇을 원하는지 알거든요

Becoming an International motivational speaker

바로 세계적인 강사가 되는 것이죠

(Applause)

(박수)

I know It's not going to be easy

네 알아요 쉽진 않겠죠

Maybe there is no space for me

제 자리는 이미 없을 수도 있어요

And there are too many international motivational speakers in this field already

이미 세계적인 강사들이 많이 있잖아요

However, no matter what other people say or how difficult it is,

하지만 사람들이 뭐라 해도 , 어떤 어려움이 있어도

I will never give up

저는 포기하지 않을 겁니다

And most definitely, I will squeeze my body,

분명히 저는 제 몸을 구겨서라도 들어갈 거예요

push and shove with my hands, my shoulders, my backpack, and even with my bottom

손으로, 어깨로, 가방으로, 엉덩이로 밀고 비비면서 말이에요

I will just say "Let me get in. Excuse me. Allow me some space“

“잠시만요 , 저 좀 들여보내 주세요”라고 말하면서요

Today I'm taking my first step as an international motivational speaker

오늘이 제가 세계적인 강사로 첫발을 내딛는 날입니다

This is my first powerful speech in English

이것이 제가 처음으로 하는 영어 강연입니다

So, what do you think?

Did I do a good job?

어떠세요. 괜찮았나요?

I think this is a pretty good start

이 정도면 꽤 괜찮은 출발인 거 같네요

All of us here today have a dream

오늘 여기계신 모든 분들도 꿈이 있을 겁니다

If you have been getting on that crowded train,

여러분이 붐비는 지하철을 타는 사람이라면

You are ready to begin your career

여러분은 커리어를 시작할 준비가 된 것입니다

You have practiced enough

연습은 충분히 했습니다

Just believe in yourself, don't give up

자신을 믿으세요

그리고 포기하지 마세요

There will always be a space for you

여러분을 위한 자리는 언제나 있습니다

Let's keep moving towards our dream together with me, your big sister
