사실 제가 할 수 있는 이야기는 많지 않은 것 같아요

Actually, I'm not sure if there's much I can tell you

많지 않지만 제가 지난 짧은 창업 경험과 벤처 경험을 통해서

Although there's not much, through my recent short experience starting my own company

삶의 진리나 우주의 원리들을 파악하게 되고

I've come to learn some things about life as well as some universal principles

이런 것들을 저의 깨달음들을 같이 공유하고 싶은 생각에 왔습니다

I've come here to share some of these realizations with you

제가 공유하고 싶은 깨달음은 

One of these is the fact that

'재미있고 의미 있는 일을 하면 돈이 따라온다?!'입니다

'When you do the kind of work which is fun and meaningful, the money will follow eventually'

끝에 물음표랑 느낌표가 같이 있어요

There is both a question mark and an exclamation mark at the end of that

재미있고 의미 있는 일을 하면 돈이 따라오나요?

When you do fun and meaningful work the money will follow eventually?

진짜요? (네) 진실인가요? (네)

Really? (yes) Is that true? (yes)

재미있고 의미 있는 일과 돈이 어떻게 연결되는 건지 되게 궁금하더라구요

I had always been curious about how I can combine fun and fulfilling work and making enough money

재미있고 의미 있는 일을 해도 굶는 사람 정말정말 많이 봤거든요

Because I've seen many people hungry as they are working on meaningful and fun projects

재미있고 의미 있는 일을 해서 돈이 따라오는 게 아니라

Isn't it that by doing fun and meaningful work you will make lots of money

그냥 돈이 벌리니까 그 일이 재미있고 의미있는 건 아닐까?

but by making money you will feel you're doing something fun and meaningful?

이런 생각까지 하게 됐어요

This is how I even used to think

어느 게 진실일까요?

Which one is true?

My Story

저는 창업하기 전에

Before I started my own business

보스턴 컨설팅 그룹이라는 경영 컨설팅 회사를 다녔었어요

I used to work with a business consulting company called 'Boston Consulting Group'

굉장히 좋은 회사고 촉망받던 인재였었습니다

It was really nice company and I was one of their top prospects

(웃음)

(laughter)

이렇게 아시아 홈페이지에서 게재가 될 정도로 굉장히 좋아했었고

They liked me so much so that they made posting about me on Asia website

정말 열심히 일을 하고 그랬었는데

That's how hard I used to work

연봉이 높은 것은 말할 것도 없고

Obviously my salary was high during that time

저녁 비용으로는 하루에 한 2만 원씩 계속 나와요

They gave me 20,000won spending money for dinner each day

2만 원 채우기 힘들거든요

It's not easy spending 20,000won for dinner each day

그리고 1년에 몇 명 뽑지도 않고 굉장히 힘들게 들어가야 되고

They didn't hire a few people a year and it is very competitive too

집에 왔다 갔다 할 때는 모범택시 타고 왔다 갔다 하고 이럽니다

I commuted to and from work by luxury taxi

근데 이게 뭐가 좋아요? 그죠?

What's good about that? Right?

근데 반대 급부도 당연히 있죠

But of course there were downsides as well

새벽까지 일을 해야 되고

I had to work past midnight

하루 종일 받는 빛의 양이 노트북에서 나오는 빛 있죠?

On a typical day the only light I could see was coming from my notebook

그 빛이 제가 받는 빛의 양의 전부였었어요

That was all the light I got during the day

그 정도로 굉장히 열심히 일을 해야죠 당연히 반대급부로

Having to work that hard was of course a downside

근데 굉장히 좋은 회사인 거는 말할 것도 없어요

But it goes without saying that this company was a very renowned one

그런데 어느 날 문득

But one day,

'아, 내가 이 세계가 왜 좋은 거지?' 라는 생각을 하게 됐어요

I was thinking 'How come I like this life?'

이 세계가 어찌 보면 매트릭스 안의 세계가 아닐까 하는 생각이 들더라고요

I was wondering whether life in the matrix would be like this

매트릭스 세계를 보면 진짜 좋은 세계지만 가짜 세계가 있고

Because in the matrix the way it works is that although you live in a really good world it's fake

진짜 안 좋은 세계지만 진짜 세계가 있잖아요?

The really bad world is the real deal, isn't it?

여러분은 무얼 택하시고 싶으신가요?

What would you choose?

되게 고민되실 거에요, 그죠?

I bet you are worried about this a lot, aren't you?

그런 선택지가 앞에 있는 거를 제가 어느 순간 인지를 했죠

Being confronted with this question I knew I had to choose one over the other

내가 좋아서 좋다는 것인가?

Because I like it, it's good?

아니면 남이 좋다고 해서 세상이 좋다고 해서 좋은 것인가?

or if people like it the world likes it, so it's good?

이런 본질적인 질문을 던지게 되었죠

I asked myself this essential question

그렇게 하면서 저희 회사 같은 경우는 MBA를 갔다 와야만 승진할 수 있기 때문에

In my company's case in order to get promoted you had to go to MBA

MBA를 준비하기 시작하면서 느낀 게

While I was preparing for MBA

경쟁을 하고 있다는 느낌을 받았었어요

I got the feeling that I am competing with others

제가 사회인이 되고 대학 들어오고 이러면은 경쟁이란 건 없을 줄 알았거든요

I thought there would be no more competition once you graduate university and get a job

근데 또 경쟁을 하는 거예요

But there I was competing again

아시아의 동일한 연령대의 남자인 비슷한 직종에 있는 사람들과

against the same people, Asian men, similar age, and job

또 경쟁을 하기 시작하는 거예요

I was competing with those again

근데 이 경쟁은 도대체 언제 끝날까 하는 생각이 들더라고요

When in the world will this competition end? I was thinking that

도대체 언제 끝날까

When will it end?

MBA 갔다 오고 그럼 다시 또 취업 경쟁하고 승진 경쟁하고

After MBA I would be competing for a job, for being promoted

차 경쟁하고, 아파트 경쟁하고, 배우자 경쟁하고

for having the nicest car, the best apartment, finding a partner

자녀 낳으면 아들 경쟁하고 그리고 은퇴하면 노후 경쟁?

then when I have children, son competition After retirement, the struggle in ones's declining years?

도대체 이 끝 없는 경쟁은 언제까지 계속될까 하는 생각이 들더라고요

Until when will this endless competition continue? I used to have those thoughts a lo

남이 만들어 놓은 판 위에서. 그죠?

It's what others want you to do, isn't?

내가 만들어 놓은 판이 아니라

It's not what you want to do

근데 이 판을 한번 내가 직접 만들어보고 싶다

I wanted to live by my own standards and ways

이런 식의 생각들을 많이 가지게 되었어요

I had those kinds of thoughts a lot

이러던 찰나에 딱 이때

At that time

"3달 남았습니다" 이런 이야기를 듣게 되죠

"3 months left" That's the news I was told

저희 아버지가 아프셔서 '세 달 남았습니다' 선고를 받았었어요

My father was diagnosed with an illness They told him he's got 3 months left

그 선고 앞에 서고 나니까 정말 모든 게 다 하얘지고 사라지더라고요

Being confronted with that kind of news my mind went completely blank

정말 그 죽음과 삶, 이것 말고는 아무것도 존재하지 않는 이야기였었어요

Life and death were the only two things which existed for me

정말 중요한 게 무엇인지 보게 되고

I came to think about what really important things are in life

정말 중요한 가치에 대해서 생각을 하게 되고

as well as about the important values we all hold dear

그런데 아버지가 하신 말씀은 단 하나였어요

But there is one thing my father said to me before he died

'끝을 생각해라'

'Think of the end'

'너의 마지막을 생각해라'

'Think of the end of your life'

'너의 마지막' 어떤 모습일까?

'The end of your life' What will it be like?

정말 열심히 사시고 사회적으로 경제적으로 정말 열심히 하신 분인데

Everything he did, he used to give it his all, both on a social and economical level

마지막에 하시는 말씀이 그런 말씀이시더라고요

and yet his last words were just like that

그 말씀을 듣고 '라디오 스타' 아시죠? (그걸) 보시는데

After the talk with him, I watched 'Radio Star,' you know the show

이적이 나와서 공포 납량 특집이었어요

Jeok Lee on the show, it was a special horror episode

제일 무서운 노래 부르라고 하더라고요. 무서운 노래

He was asked to sing the scariest song, scary song

무서운 노래 부르라고 하니까 이적이 이 노래를 부르더라고요

and he sang it

"난 참 바보처럼 살았군요"  [링크]

"I lived like a fool"

정말 죽기 직전에 눈 감기 직전에

What if just before I die, right before I close my eyes,

그 노래를 되뇌게 된다면 그 말을 하게 된다면

and repeat the song, utter the lyrics

얼마나 얼마나 얼마나 슬플까 하는 생각을 하게 됐어요

How! how sad it is, I thought

얼마나 얼마나 슬플까, 그죠?

How sad it all is, right?

그래서 끝에 그런 노래를 부르지 않기 위해서

To not sing the song at the end

저의 마지막 모습을 한번 생각해 보았습니다

I thought about the last of my life

CEO

전 경영학과였어요

I majored in Business Management

경영학과는 아무 생각없이 80%가 꿈이 동일해요

Almost 80% of students in that department have same goal

CEO

뭐 하는 지도 모르고 어떻게 되는 지도 모르지만

They don't know what a CEO exactly does and how to be a CEO

무조건 CEO가 되고 싶다고 하거든요

But they just want to become a CEO

근데 이 일이 있고 나서 어느 날 문득 보게 되니까

After the matter one day I faced it

next?

저거 다음은 무엇일까 하는 생각이 들었어요

I thought of it myself what's next?

저거 다음은 무엇일까?

what's next?

다음은 무엇일까? CEO 다음에

What is next? After becoming a CEO

다음에 뭐죠? 죽는 건가요?

And then? Dead?

다음에

And then..next

이 다음을 보니까, 대부분 여러가지 경로를 가게 되지만

When I looked over the others' cases, they went various ways

교수님으로 가시는 경우도 있고

Some became a professor,

보통 비즈니스에 가장 뜻이 있으신 분들은

or some who were mostly interested in business

자기의 네트워크나 자산을 가지고 자기의 기업을 창업하시는 경우들이 많더라고요

started their own businesses based on their networks and assets

그렇게 창업을 해서, 성공을 해서 수백억 수천억을 벌었어요

Then, what if I formed my business, succeeded it and made megabucks

오, 좋죠

Oh, it sounds great!

그 다음은 무엇일까요? 그 다음

And then, what's next?

한 번도 생각해 보지 않았던 그 다음

The next that I had never thought about in my life

그 다음을 보게 되니까 이 분이 보이시더라고요

Through I searched for the point of next, I found him

수백억 수천억하고는 비교도 안 되는 정말 엄청난 돈을 버신 분이죠

He earned massive money beyond compared to other millionaires

이 분을 보고 나니까, 이런 많은 사람들은 공통점이 있는 것 같더라고요

After I found him, I realized that those kinds of people have something in common

커리어 패스에 보면

in career path

맨 마지막에 이런 분이나, 워렌 버핏이나 철강왕 카네기나, 노벨, 이런 분들 보면

When I looked at the ends of him, Warren Buffett, the steel magnate, Carnegie and Nobel

엄청나게 돈을 벌고 성공을 하게 되면

They succeeded, earned enormous money

맨 마지막에 사회에 좋은 일을 하는 이런 모습으로 되는 경우들이 많더라고요

and they contributed to public welfare I found many cases like it

근데 요즘 젊은 청춘들 보면 그런 꿈을 가진 사람 굉장히 많아요

There are a lot of youths who have that kinds of dreams

굉장히 많죠?

A lot!

근데 한 가지 조건이 있죠 조건

But there is one condition, condition..

나중에 성공하면 돈 많이 벌면, 그죠?

After I succeed, after I make a fortune

왜 지금은 안 되는 거지?

Why couldn't it be now?

왜 저렇게 50대 60대 때까지 기다려야 하는 거지? 하는 생각이 드는 거예요, 그죠?

Why should I wait till 50s and 60s? I thought of it myself

왜 지금 하면 안 될까?

Why not now?

MBA ad

정말 아이러니하게도 이 생각을 굳혀준 게 MBA로 오라는 MBA 광고였어요

Ironically, I solidified the thought because of MBA ad

잘 안 보이실 텐데 MBA 광고를 보면

You may be hard to see it, on the MBA ad

'시장도 변하고, 경쟁도 변하고, 조직도 변하는데'

Your market is changing, your competition is changing, your organization is changing

'너는 무엇을 변화시키고 있느냐?'

what are you changing?

이런 질문을 던지더라고요

it gave out the question

너는 무엇을 변화시키고 있느냐

What are you changing?

저는 제 가장 소중한 20대 때 MBA에 가서 준비해서 하게 되면

I thought if I spend the most precious 20s for MBA and prepare my career

제 연봉이 달라지고, 포지션이 달라지고 배우자가 달라지고, 이럴 수는 있지만

My salary, position and wife could be better

저의 가장 소중한 20대를 바쳐서 저의 인생에 가장 소중한 시간을 바쳐서

But with all my 20s, with the most precious time in my life

뭔가 가치 있는 일을 하고 싶었었어요

I would like to have done something valuable

뭔가 가치 있는 일

something meaningful

정말 어리석은 생각이죠

It sounds stupid

정말 몽상가 같은 생각이죠

It is like thoughts of dreamers

그래서 저의 사업의 첫 질문은 이 질문이어야 되요. 당연히!

When I started my business, of course, the first question should have been this

어떻게 하면 돈을 많이 벌 수 있을까? 어떻게 하면 돈을 많이 벌 수 있을까?

How can I make a fortune? How can I generate megabucks?

당연히 이게 첫 질문이어야 되는데

of course, the first question had to be it

근데 저의 첫 질문은 이게 아니라

Nevertheless, my first question wasn't it

'어떻게 하면 재미있고 의미있는 일을 할 수 있을까?' 였어요

'What can I do something fun and meaningful?'

저의 어머니는 '너는 현실을 모른다' 이런 말씀을 하셨죠

My mom used to say "You don't know the reality"

재미있고 의미있는 일을 할 수 있을까 이런 생각을 하고, 시작을 해 보자 해서

I thought what would be fun and meaningful and I want to make it

'마이크임팩트'라는 기업을 생각했습니다

I considered the enterprise called 'Mic Impact"

'마이크임팩트'는 마이크를 통해서 세상에 긍정적인 임팩트를 준다

'micimpact" is to give positive impact to the world through the Microphone

이런 스토리나 강연을 통해서

through the stories and lecturers

but rather selling such dreams and stories will be spotlighted

이런 이야기들을 하더라고요

He said about it

그런데 그런 기업이 진짜 없는 거예요

But there were no such corporations Indeed

그죠? 진짜 없어요

Right? Indeed, there's nothing

그런 거를 파는 것처럼 하는 것처럼 보이지만은

Some seemed they were selling such things,

실제로는 그렇지 않더라고요

yet actually they weren't

그래서 저희는 정말로 꿈과 스토리를 만들어 내고 전파하자

So we indeed wanted to make and spread the dreams and stories

어떻게 사업을 할 것이냐?

How do we manage?

잘 모르겠습니다

I didn't know exactly

그렇지만 이러한 뜻과 비전을 가지고 한번 해 보자 그랬죠

but we pursuited let's do it based on the aim and vision

딱 생각을 하고 나서 저에게는 실행이 이런 것 같았어요, 실행이

After setting the goal, putting it into practice was like it

다리에 테이프를 붙여놓고 이거를 빨리 떼느냐, 천천히 떼느냐

I put tapes on my legs, and rip off it quickly or slowly?

뭘 택하실래요?

what would you choose?

(빨리 떼는 거)

(Quickly)

당연히 빨리 떼겠죠 그죠?

Of course, we'd like to rip off it quickly right?

그런데 많은 사람들이 무얼 하고 싶다 무슨 꿈을 가지고 있어도

Although each of people has own dream to be,

그냥 마음속에 품고 살아가시는 분들이 있어요

some of them just live keeping it in mind

그건 천천히 떼는 것도 아니고 그냥 붙여놓고 사는 거예요

That is not ripping off the tape slowly even but living with the tape on legs

그죠? 얼마나 아프겠어요

isn't it? how painful it could be!

그런데 저에게는 실행이 이런 거였거든요

but for me, paractice meant like that

한 번 딱 생각을 하고 나서

after i made up my mind once

어떻게 할지 모르겠지만 무조건 한번 해보자라는 생각을 했었고

Though i don't know how to do at all, just i thought let's go for it

친구들을 모았죠. 친구들 그냥 본업에 있는 친구들

i called my friends, friends who having their jobs

같이 한 번 재미있는 프로젝트 해 보자

Let's do fun and meaningful project together

너 하는 거 그만두지 말고 재밌게 한번 해 보자

Do not quit your job, just let's do it with enjoyable

저도 회사 다니면서 그렇게 같이 진행을 했었어요

i also kept to go to work and proceeded together

하면서 이런 식의 '콘서트처럼 해 보자' 라는 생각을 해서

While we do, it came up to my mind to have a way similar with concert

우리나라에서 가장 큰 데가 어디냐 그래서 찾아보니까

then we were looking for where is the biggest place

고려대학교 화정 체육관이 제일 크더라고요

then we found that Korea University's Hwajeong gym is the one

한 8,000 명 ~ 9,000 명 들어가는 곳인데

it was accessible enough about 8,000~9,000 numbers of people to go in

그래서 대관료를 물어봤죠

so i asked rental fee

한 얼마면 되겠지? 무료로도 할 수 있지 않을까 했는데

i expected it would be not quite a lot and maybe possible to be free

대관료가 천만원 천만원

but the rental fee was 10,000,000 won 10,000,000 won

(한숨)

(sigh)

감당하기 힘든 돈이었죠

it was not manageble money

그리고 바로 입금했어요 2시간 안에

then i transfered the money right away in two hours

어떻게 할 지도 모르겠는데

even we didn't have any idea how to do

정말 그때 봤으면 누구나 봐도 욕했을 굉장히 어리석은X2 결정이었어요

Everyone would balme on me if they saw me making that silly decision

근데 지금 보면 가장 현명한 결정이었던 것 같아요

However, now i know that it was the wisest decision ever

그때 그러지 않았다면 저는 이 자리에 없었을 겁니다

if i didn't decide like that way, i were not be here

계속 어딘가에서 회사를 다니고 있었겠죠, 그죠?

maybe i continually attend to some company, isn't it?

저희의 가장 차별점이

Our the most distingushing point is the think that

교수님이나 어른들 이런 분들이 아니라

not only professors and the old

이런 분들도 강연할 수 있다

but also these kinds of people can have speech

자기의 스토리가 큰 모티브를 줄 수 있다는 생각이였었어요

and their own stories can give people big motive

노홍철씨 불러서, 노홍철 오셔 가지고 대학교 때 사업했던 얘기나, 사기 쳤던 이야기들

We invited Noh-Hong-Cheol then he talked about his business story when he was in the university,

뭐 이런 이야기들 해주시면서

his experience ever played a trick at that moment etc.

굉장히 큰 모티베이션을 많이 주셨었거든요. 굉장히 재밌었었고

He gave us big motivation indeed And it was fun indeed,too

또 박원순 시장님

And mayor of Seoul Park-Won-Soon

이때는 사실은 박원순 상임 이사님인지도 잘 몰랐었고

Honestly, we didn't know well about him whether he is an executive director or not at this time

그리고 아름다운 재단도 대학생들이 잘 몰랐었어요

and university students didn't know well about 'the beautiful found' neither

누군지도 잘 몰랐었고, 항상 저 분 누굴까 대학생들이 이렇게 봤었는데

Although the students didn't know who he is and used to look at him wondering who is he,

이 분의 이야기가 끝나고 나서

after he finished his talk,

그 돈 없는 대학생들 한 200명 정도가

around of 200 numbers of the students who do not have enough money

아름다운 재단에 기부하는 서약을 했었거든요

swore to donate for the beaufiful fund

이걸 보면서 '우리가 정말 사람을 변화시킬 수 있구나'

While i see what's happening, I started to think

이런 생각들을 하게 됐어요

'we can make people change indeed'

친구들이 '굉장히 재미있고 의미있는 일인 것 같다'

Friends told me, 'it seems like really fun and mearningful '

근데 이제 물어보죠 꼭 물어보는 게 있죠

then, they ask me definitely there is the ask

"근데 돈은 좀 돼?"

"But is there money?"

어떻게 하지. 돈이 어떻게 될 지 모르겠는 거예요, 도대체

How? i don't have any idea about how to make money at all

어떻게 해야지 돈이 되는지

How to make money

뭐 만 원씩 받아서 어떻게 돈이 되겠어요 아무리 큰 행사를 해도, 그죠?

How can i make money by collecting 10,000 won even if i make big events, right?

근데 이렇게 있어 가지고 어떻게 해야 되나 고민을 하고 있었는데

While i worry what should i do,

딱 두 번째로 하게 된 게 환경부에서 경포대, 해운대에서

as the second, the ministry of environment wanted to hold 'Green story concert'

환경에 대한 메시지를 전달하는 그린 스토리 콘서트를 하고 싶다

deliving message about environment in Gyeongpodae and Haeundae

그래서 3만 명 규모로 굉장히 크게 한번 진행했었죠

So we hosted that with three milions people

딱 끝나고 나서

Right after we ended up the concert,

우리나라의 10대 대기업, 정말 많은 대기업들이 저희한테 의뢰를 하기 시작합니다

the biggest companies of our country, really many the biggest companies asked us

저희 할 줄 아는 거 아무것도 없는데

even though we didn't have anything able to do

와가지고 '같이 하자, 같이 하자' 이런 식으로 얘기를 하면서 크게 만들기 시작하죠

Just they started to make big things telling us 'Let's do it togeter, together'

몇 천만 원 이상 되는 거는 꼭 제안서 작업을 거쳐야 되거든요

In case of being over several 10,000,000 won it should be done with proposals

비딩(입찰)을 해야 하는데 '아 저희 그런 거 안 합니다' 하니까

it was required to do bidding but we said 'we don't do that'

자기네가 제도를 바꿔서 얘기를 하는 거예요 '그럼 너 해라'

Then they changed system itself and then said us again 'Do it, please'

이런 식으로까지 얘기를 하고

Even they have done like this

저희는 마케팅이나 영업 이런 데 인력이 아무것도 없거든요

We didn't have any human resource as like marketing or sales department

그게 없는데도 불구하고 사람들이 와서

Even though we didn't have anything,

'같이 하자, 같이 하자' 이런 얘기를 하기 시작한 거죠

이게 굉장히 돈이 되게 돌아가기 시작하면서

대중적으로 큰 기폭제가 됐던 거는 '남자의 자격' 강연이었어요

'Man's Qualification' was the big catalyst for being popular

같이 하면서 김국진 씨가 굉장히 크게 팡 터뜨려 주면서

Kim kookjin led big popularity on it,

이런 콘텐츠에 대한 반향들이 일어나기 시작했죠

it brought out sensation about these kinds of contents

이런 콘텐츠가 재미도 있을 수도 있고 감동이 있을 수도 있겠구나

These contents could make not only fun but also touching

이런 이야기들을 하게 되면서 저희가 큰 대기업의 스폰서를 받아서

Then through sponsorship from big company

한강에서 '청춘 페스티발' 굉장히 크게 페스티발을 진행을 했었고

we had hosted 'Youth festival' as quite big size

안정적으로 계속 진행을 해서 큰 금액을 확보하게 되었고

and continually preceed it with stable then could obtain big amount of money

최근에는 저번 주에 끝났는데 전국 12개 지역을 돌면서

Recently, it has finished last week, We went to around 12 regions

거의 2만 명 ~ 3만 명 규모로 '열정락서'라는 프로그램을 진행을 했었습니다

and proceded program called as 'Yyeol-joeng-lak-seo' with almost 2~3 milions people

저희의 가려고 하는 곳은 여기예요 '상암 월드컵 경기장'

we did then where we eager to go is here 'The Sangahm Worldcup Stadium'

7만 명 들어가는 곳인데 계속 얘기하고 있거든요

7 milions people are accessible, we have talked about this

대관료가 억 대더라고요, 억 대 그래서 의논을 하고 있는데

The lental fee is hundreds of millions of won So we have discussed it

여기까지 가는 게 저희의 꿈이에요

To reach the stadium is our dream

저희가 프로덕션 비즈니스는 갖췄거든요

we have already buisness production

그런데 갖추고 나니까 저희가 명사들과 관계가 좋아지잖아요

But after we had it, we could have good relationship with celebrities

좋아지니까 연락들이 오는 거예요

Then we could have many contacts

이 사람 섭외해 달라, 해 달라

Please cast someone

어떤 명사들은 자기를 매니지먼트해 달라

Some of celebirities asked us to manage them

이렇게 하니까, 에이전시 비즈니스가 생겨나는 거죠

Likewise, agency business has built up naturally

저희가 도전했던 분이에요 페이스북의 CEO인 '크리스 휴즈'

This is who we tried to cast CEO of facebook Chris Hughes

어떤 기업이 우리와 진행을 했었는데 당연히 실패했죠

Such a company tried to invite him of course it was failed

실패했는데 저희는 너무 좋았어요

Though we failed, we were so happy about

여기까지 도전할 수 있는 정도로 성장했다는 게

that we at least grew up to challenge this project

그래서 에이전시 비즈니스가 형성되고

So the agency business was formed

하나의 안정적인 수익모델로 갖춰가게 됩니다

and evolved into a stable profit model

이렇게 하게 되니까 많은사람들이 자기가 강연하고 싶다는 사람들이 엄청 많더라고요

After that there came a lot of people who are willing to give a talk

와서 자기가 강연하겠다, 이런 식으로 해서 저희가 스쿨을 또 만들었어요

they said they would come to give a talk So we made a school for them

스쿨을 만들어서 저기 보이시는 게 있는데

we made a school as you can see

'오빠미쳐' 어플 만들었다가 구속당한 학교 후배를 데려다가

I brought one of my junior who had been imprisoned for making 'Oppamicheo' app

애플리케이션 만들기 강의시키고

to let him lecture about 'how to make applications'

그리고 '짝' 나갔다가 떨어졌던 애 불러다가 연애법 강연시키고

and someone who appeared in TV show 'Jjak' but unsuccessful to let her lecture about 'Art of loving'

이런 식으로 교육 과정들을 만드니까 사람들이 되게 신기해하더라고요

Like these we made a curriculum and people were amazed

많이 오게 되고 이제는 평생교육과정 이런 데서도 많은 의뢰가 오고 있어요

Many people began to come and now we receive many requests from even lifelong education centers

이렇게 스쿨 비즈니스를 갖추게 되고

After building a school business there comes another problem

강의 할 장소가 필요하지 않겠냐? 공간 비즈니스를 해 보자 해가지고

'Do we need a place for lecture?' So, we started a room business

저희 윗층에다가 180평 되는 공간에 내년에 스퀘어 오픈이 있습니다

We are planning to open 595-square-meter square upstairs next year

이러한 것들을 보면 하나도 '어떻게 우리가 돈을 벌까' 고민했던 게 아니라

As you can see, we did not worry about how to earn money but

콘텐츠에 대한 고민을 하면서 이렇게 이렇게 계속 이어져 왔었던 거예요

we thought about our contents This process holds our business

이어져 오면서 이런 비즈니스가 형성됐던 구조였던 거죠

The structure of continuing derived businesses

지금 이런 과정들을 2년 만에 해냈어요

We made up this process in 2 years

강연이나 토크를 중심으로 하는 콘텐츠 문화를 만들고

In making contents culture with lecture or talks

안정적인 수익 기반을 갖추고 몇십 명이 함께하는 조직을 만드는데

and building an organization that has stable profit infra with tens of workers

저희가 어떻게 돈을 벌까 고민하는 게 아니라

we did not consider how to make money but

어떻게 하면 재미있고 의미있는 일을 할 수 있을까

how to do funny and meaningful things

어떻게 하면 이 콘텐츠를 잘 만들 수 있을까

how to make a great contents

이런 고민들이 만들어 냈죠

these considerations made it

"재미있고 의미 있는 일을 하면 돈이 따라온다?"

'When you do the kind of work which is fun and meaningful, the money will follow eventually?'

그렇더라고요

근데 몇 가지 조건이 있어요

but a few conditions added

첫 번째는 모두에게 재미있고 의미가 있어야 해요, 모두에게

First, it should be meaningful and funny to all of us, everyone

혼자 재미있고 의미있으면 안 돼요

It shouldn't be meaningful or fun only to you

그건 혼자 그냥 노는 거거든요

It's just playing alone

모두에게 재미있고 의미가 있어야지만

Only if it is meaningful and fun to everyone

사람들이 찾아주고 즐겨줄 수가 있거든요

people find it and enjoy it

두 번째는 리마커블 (remarkable) 해야 됩니다

Second, it should be 'remarkable'

아무리 재미있고 의미있는 일이 있어도

however funny and meaningful a thing may be

그냥 다 고만고만하면 아무도 알아주지 않아요

no one recognizes if they are of a sort

정말 리마커블하고, 정말 뛰어나고 정말 주목 받을 만 해야지만

Only when it is remarkable, outstanding and worth paying attention

그 다음에 이것들이 비즈니스로 연결될 수 있어야 되는 거예요

this thing can be connected into business

세 번째는 비즈니스가 아니라 코어, 핵심에 집중하는 거예요

Third, focus not a business but core

저희는 한 번도 '돈을 어떻게 벌까' '이걸로 해서 어떻게 팔아볼까'

We've never thought about 'how to make money, how to sell this'

'유료로 해서 팔아볼까' 이런 걸 고민했던 게 아니라

'do we have to make it charged? we haven't considered these things

어떻게 하면 이러한 콘텐츠를 잘 만들어낼 수 있고

but how to make things cool

더 잘 확보할 수 있고, 더 잘 전파할 수 있을까를 고민했던 거예요

how to secure the good products, to spread these things

그게 비즈니스로 이어지게 되었던 거죠

All these have been led to our business

리마커블한 이야기입니다, 그죠?

But the story does not end yet

저희가 사업을 하면서 가장 어려운 것 중 하나가

One of the most difficult things when doing business

창업하면서 가장 어려운 게 장소죠 장소, 장소

when doing startups is a place

여기가 저희가 입주한 광화문인데

Here is where we moved in, Kwanghwamun

저희가 일하는 걸 보고 신문기사 난 걸 보면서

One day, a businessman came to us when he saw our article in the newspaper

어느 한 사업가가 오셔서 말씀해 주셨어요

and he told 'what do you need?'

'뭐가 필요하니?' '장소가 필요합니다'

'we need a place'

그래서 종각역, 그 광화문 한복판에 비싼 곳에

So, in Jong-gak, expensive place in middle of Kwanghwamun

50평 되는 오피스를 무상으로 임대해 주셨어요

he gave us an 165-square-meter office free of charge

돈뿐만 아니라 정말 선의의 감동적인 도움도 함께 하더라고요

Not just for money but well-intended touching assistances were with us

대학교 때 누가 제가 좋아하는 일을 물으면

When I was in college someone asking what I like

저는 좋은 사람들 만나서 영감을 받고

I answered I liked meeting good people who gave me some inspiration

같이 밥 먹고 이런 걸 되게 좋아했었거든요

dining with them or something like these

근데 이런 건 일이 아니잖아요

But these things are not what we call 'job'

너무 신기하게도 그걸 제가 본업으로 하고 있는 거예요

However, surprisingly I am doing these stuffs as a job

돈만 따라오는 게 아니라 자아실현과 행복도 따라오더라고요

there come not just money but self-fulfillment and happiness

벤처는 정말 힘든 게 사람들 모으는 거예요

When doing venture it is hard to gather people

사람들 모으는 건데

really, gather people

이렇게 3명으로 시작을 했다가 이제는 정말 많은 사람들이 함께 해요

Our company started with 3 but now so many people are with us

근데 너무 신기했던 거는, 저희가 리쿠르팅을 따로 하는 게 아니라

One thing that surprised me was that we did not recruit people especially

사람들이 한명 한명 재미있고 의미있는 일인 것 같다며 따라 오더라고요

People joined one by one saying that it's funny and meaningful

저희는 지금도 '원피스'의 루피 이런 것처럼 그냥 신나는 모험을 하고 있을 따름이에요

We're just doing exciting adventure like Luffi in One Piece comicbook

매출을 얼마를 하고, 큰 기업을 만들고 상장하고, 이런 게 목표가 아니라

We do not focus on recording sales, building a big business, listing company

정말 즐겁고 신나는 모험을 하는 거예요

We're just in adventure which is really funny and exciting

이런 것들을 생각해보면

Considering all these things together

제가 단순히 비즈니스를 만들고 돈을 쫓는데 집중을 했더라면

If I just focus on making business or seeking money

여기까지 했을까라는 생각을 해요

I wouldn't be here

재미있고 의미 있는 일을 하면 결론은 돈만 따라오는 게 아니에요

When doing fun and meaningful things, not just money will follow after all

정말 감동적인 도움과 그리고 가슴 벅찬 행복과 자아실현

Touching assistance, overwhelming happiness, self-fulfillment

그리고 멋진 동료

and nice colleagues

그리고 언젠가는 이런 크리스마스도 함께 보낼 멋진 여자 친구도 따라올 거라 믿습니다
