okay good afternoon everybody thank you
for being here
my name is Elisabetta Phantogram from
Milano and I'm here to present you a
sternum which is a cultural enterprise
and it's project sternum is a cultural
enterprise it was founded in Milano in
1995 and our we develop projects
cultural project events communication
campaign services that they are all
connected together by one big theme
which is our main field of interest and
of intervention which is the public
space on this theme I think that we are
kind of pioneer especially in Milano and
especially in Italy because when we
started to work on the public space 20
years ago it was I think that anybody
was interested in public space was
always conceived as a place for private
interests so we started to develop
project to find again a value for the
public space as the only space where a
community can grow where a city can be
built and can grow where people can meet
gather create relations and when they
they can grow socially culturally and
politically and I mean politically in
the wider sense of the word that is
connected to the Greek police so to the
city and to citizenship to explain
better what we think about public space
and what we do I will present some of
our project that we have developed in
these past years and then in the end I
will present to you a project that is
already in development that we are
working right now in which we are
working right now in these days and on
which we would like to gather
collaboration and ideas and people and
so I think that this could be the right
place to to do it
we do a lot of
very different things so I hope that
this presentation won't get you more
confused about what we do but just make
it more clear to you the Milano Finn
festival is it the name says it's a Film
Festival we have organized it now for 20
years next year will be our 20th edition
it's a film festival that lasts for 10
days we gather films and filmmakers from
all over the world in Milano each year
in September and we gather an audience
of like 100,000 people and but the very
characteristic of this Film Festival is
the place where it happens that of
course is the public space and in this
photo you can see one of our main venue
which is a park in the city center of
Milano this space that you see is
usually empty and just used to pass by
or to run or walk and for 10 days it
becomes a place where people can gather
they go there to see films to see
concerts to have a beer to have good
food to just hang out with friends it
stays open until late at night like 3:00
in the morning and for really for 10
days we transform that place and also
the perception that people as of that
place this is another venue which is
outside one of the main theaters in the
city and this is our other project is
the public design festival and it was
created from our experience during the
design week you know that Design Week in
Milano in April is one of the main
gathering on design
internationally-renowned
and we as a sternly started 20 years ago
with some intervention during the design
week of course on the outside so on the
unofficial program of the design week
and we started to develop our project on
public space and in the past years we
just get in connection to many other
people around the world designers
architects artists has become involved
in this team of the public space West
have developed interesting projects so
we decided in 2009 to create a festival
the public design festival to invite to
Milano of this new project that were
being created each year we choose a
different public space in the city where
and a different team and we invite
designers and architects to develop
projects for for our festival last year
it was in in a new Piazza in Milano this
is quite in the city center but it was
an old Piazza that has been restored but
the City Council we study in a way that
it can be used actually as as a Piazza
as a square because it's completely
empty there's anything even there is no
band she's not and enough public
furnitures so you can't use it as a
Piazza so we decided to make our
intervention there and the theme last
year was food so food is usually an
element of social interaction so we
wanted to put together food and public
space and to let people use the food so
to cook to eat and to exchange it to
make the public space and that Piazza
alive again that's another project we're
on Kushina kokanee is an old farmhouse
in the city center it it is from the 17
late 17th century it is of the City
Council and was completely abandoned as
you can see and ruined and like five or
six years ago we started a movement
together with the neighborhood so the
people living there the community
people living around the the Kushina on
the farmers to understand what we could
do to restore this place and to open it
again to the city so we talked with the
City Council and we presented a project
and they gave us let's say permission to
restore the place and to develop our
projects so from that we started a
fundraising campaign of course we gather
like three million years more or less
from private people banks entrepreneurs
and we restore the place now it's opened
and there are a lot of things going
around now it is like that you can find
inside there is a restaurant bar and
also a farmer market a community
community garden there are spaces for
Association spaces for events there is a
small cinema so this is quite a good
example of how we work on spaces in the
city and how we work together with the
community because of course we developed
the project together with the people
living there and everybody who was
interested in developing the project
together with us in this year we have
also developed a sort of permanent lab
on public design with which we develop
projects of public design around the
world just a few examples here we were
invited in Gamache in Portugal which was
European Capital of Culture in 2012 and
we were invited to this neighborhood of
chorus with which was quite abandoned it
was this place was used by tanneries -
this were turning tanks
but it was completely destroyed so we
went there and we stayed there like one
month of course we gather people we
talked with the people living there and
each day we meet new people we organized
small events breakfast meetings workshop
for children and together with them we
developed an idea what we could do there
and we designed together with them
this new PSL made by wood we decided to
use we usually often work with wood
because it's something very simple to
use that everybody can do so if you want
to work with people who are not used to
this kind of work you can do it and so
we built a small stage a small bar a
place for markets a place for a kitchen
and when we go back to Milan when we
went back to Milan this place continued
to run for some months because of the
people that were taking care of it and
using it this is a similar one the photo
is not very good but it was in Kosice in
Slovakia because it was European Capital
of Culture in 2013 we were invited by a
studio of architects from Slovakia to
develop a project there the place that
you see is under a bridge of the freeway
it is on the limit between a rich
neighborhood let's say quite rich and a
very poor neighborhood and that space
was always quite empty and dangerous
because of people were there like
drinking and so it was not really a safe
place to stay so we again involve the
people living there and we build that
installation also made by wood and they
gathered there to concert the world
screen for screenings and it run for all
the summer from June to August and it
became a place that was safe and alive
because it was lived and used by people
and this is the project I was talking
about the beginning the one that we are
developing right now and saldo is the
name of this old factory in Milano it's
that long building at the center of the
photo and the City Council has just made
a call for projects for to think about
the future of that place because now
it's abandoned and not used we presented
a project and we won and what we are now
developing you what we would like to do
it's to develop a place that could be a
model also for other cities a place that
can become necessary and essential for
every city a place where culture is at
the center of the life of people where a
community can discuss their values and
find their new values and the way of
staying together and being together we
would like that culture would become a
sort of economic engine for this place
but also for other places that could in
this way like opening a way outside of
the crisis that we are living now in
Italy and Europe of course so an open
place where you can share stories share
collaboration and where we have this
idea it will be of course an experiment
but we really believe in it we would
like to
a new kind a new idea of stock exchange
where what you are going to buy is
culture so you will buy assets but what
you're going to buy will be books will
be people will be conferences workshops
screenings so you will buy and sell
these assets participating also in the
development and the creative process to
create these things we are still in the
development of the place and of the
project this is the inside there are
also a lot of work to do to restore it
and we are gathering people energies
collaboration around it so anybody who
is interested please come after and
let's have a talk about it so I hope you
have understood a little bit more about
us and thank you very much for your
attention
you
